Batman Begins star Christian Bale encourages all his peers to work with director Werner Herzog because his stunt antics make the movie-making process really fun.

The British actor worked with Herzog on new prisoner-of-war movie Rescue Dawn, in which he portrays fighter pilot Dieter Dengler – who was shot down and captured in Laos during the Vietnam War.

And he admits the experience was a real joy because Herzog insisted on trying out all the stunts before his actors.

Bale says, “We found ourselves with 10 people making the entire movie for a couple of weeks but it was incredible finding out how few people you actually need to get a movie done.

“Werner is a truly muscular director; he will truly jump into anything. If we were going down a waterfall in a scene he would go down it himself. He didn’t need to go down it; he just wanted to do it.

“I think it helps because then you don’t get any actors whining, ‘I don’t want to go down the waterfall!’ if the director who’s in his 60s just did it. He would eat any of the maggots that I ate in the movie. I like him a great deal.

“There’s a nice sense of pushing the envelope, working with him, and seeing how far each person will go.”
